Care Guide

Each MAYA rug is crafted from natural fibres using time-honoured techniques. With considered care, your rug will mature beautifully, deepening in character over time.

General Care

Regular, gentle vacuuming using low suction and no rotating brush is recommended. Vacuum in the direction of the pile to preserve fibre integrity. Initial shedding is natural, particularly with wool, and will reduce with time. Trim loose fibres carefully with scissors; do not pull.

Rotate your rug periodically to ensure even wear and balanced exposure to light. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, as natural fibres may soften or fade over time.

Spills

Attend to spills immediately. Blot gently with a clean, dry cloth to absorb moisture. Do not rub, as friction may damage fibres or spread staining. For water-based spills, lightly blot with a damp cloth after initial absorption. For oil-based spills or persistent marks, we recommend consulting a professional rug specialist.

Avoid household cleaning agents or harsh chemicals, as these may compromise fibre structure and dye integrity.

Professional Cleaning

We recommend professional cleaning every 1 to 3 years depending on use and environment. Specialist rug cleaners experienced in natural fibres and hand-knotted construction should be engaged to preserve structure, texture, and tonal depth.

Hand Knotted Rugs

Hand knotted rugs are individually woven and may display subtle variations in texture and finish. These are inherent to the craft. Due to their construction, professional cleaning is strongly recommended to maintain pile integrity and structural longevity.

Wool

Wool is resilient and naturally stain resistant due to its lanolin content. Shedding during the initial months is normal. Wool responds best to gentle vacuuming and professional care. Avoid excessive moisture and chemical treatments.

Silk

Silk is delicate and luminous, best suited to low-traffic environments. Avoid exposure to moisture and direct sunlight. In the event of a spill, blot immediately and seek specialist cleaning advice. Do not use water or cleaning solutions on silk fibres.

Botanical Silk

Botanical silk offers a refined sheen and smooth surface. It should be treated with the same care as traditional silk. Avoid friction, moisture, and heavy traffic to preserve its finish. Professional cleaning is recommended to maintain its tonal richness.

Jute

Jute is a natural plant fibre valued for its organic texture. It is highly absorbent and should be kept dry at all times. Avoid placement in humid or damp areas. If exposed to moisture, allow to air dry fully. Spot cleaning should be minimal, as water may cause staining or fibre weakening.

Underlay

We recommend using a quality rug underlay to prevent movement, reduce wear, and provide additional cushioning. An underlay will also support airflow beneath the rug, assisting with long-term fibre health.

Crafted Variation

Due to the handcrafted nature of our rugs and the use of hand-dyed yarns, variations in tone, texture, and weave are inherent to the process and form part of the character of each piece.
